Today is Sunday the day of rest and I thought i’d write a little something before I start the new work week. Anyways, so here we are with another blog, another review and atleast this time its on food! On Saturday March 28, my girlfriend and I decided that we wanted to eat some Japanese food because it is one of the things that we just enjoy eating along with Korean, and Italian food. However, even though we love eating the Japanese food and Butterfish from Kabuki in Waimalu, we decided to go check out Shokudo in town.
Overview:Shokudo which means “Dining Room” in Japanese is located at the Ala Moana Pacific Center, 1585 Kapiolani Boulevard, Suite 814 to be exact. They offer a wide variety of dishes ranging from traditional Japanese dishes to a newer “fusion” style of Japanese dishes [x]. I haven’t been there in a while because of the fact that I wasn’t to estatic about the food that I had eaten there a while back, but we decided to go there and see how things were since they had recently changed their menu. We got there around 8pm and it wasn’t to busy for a Saturday night. We were seated quite quickly and started to figure out what we wanted from the recently changed menu. The server was very polite and the service was much better then I had expected. I ordered the Tuna Sashimi Salad, Calamari Tempura, and Spicy tuna on crispy rice, while my girlfriend on the other hand ordered the Mochi Cheese Gratin and Beef tataki on Balsamic Sushi. The food came rather quick, with the Calamari coming first along with our beers, followed by the Beef tataki, spicy tuna and Mochi cheese. Finally, the Ahi sashimi salad came shortly there after.
The Good / Bad:
The Calamari was well.. calamari cooked in batter, it tasted pretty good with the Wasabi Mayo mix. The Beef tataki on the other hand, actually tasted really good with the balsamic sauce mix, but the fact that the dish seemed tepid and not hot as I expected it to be made it turn from rather good to just ok. I wasn’t sure if the dish was made hot but the sauce was cold, or if the dish was already made and sitting. Also being that I am a avid spicy tuna lover I thought that the spicy tuna could of been more spicy and that the crispy rice didn’t fit in to well with the Spicy tuna. The crispy rice had the consistency of a overcooked hashbrown and the rice got stuck in your teeth as though you were eating days old hard rice. On the other hand my girlfriend thought that the Mochi cheese was rather good, being that you cant really screw that up. Finally, the Ahi salad was pretty decent despite the fact that you wouldn’t want to order it on a “first date” since it had a ton of onions in it and that the Ahi was previously frozen and not fresh. However, with all that said one of the good things about Shokudo is their service. The server was very polite, knowledgable on the menu and prompt in her service. Another thing you may want to think about is that after sitting in Shokudo for a little less then a hour your clothes will start to smell like oil.
Disclamer:
I am not to much of a food critic but that was just my thoughts and opinions about the food we ordered that night at Shokudo. I usually eat anything and i’m not to picky with what I eat but overall if we ever did decide to eat there again and pay 70$ + 10$ tip I don’t think i’d get the Spicy tuna on crispy rice or the Ahi salad.
Overall rating:
6/10 – Sadly, we probably won’t go back there for a while!
